Karaoke Online covers a vast amount of information, such as, buying karaoke discs and equipment, information on how to burn your own CDGs, karaoke software, and sing karaoke online. Before we delve too deeply into what exactly is available in online karaoke, I want to be sure that you protect yourself. Before shopping online be sure that you have a firewall in place and do not allow access to sites that you do not know. And never give your credit card info to a site that is not secure. You can tell if the site is secure by the little lock on the bottom toolbar of the window and by https (notice the "s") in the URL (web address). Unsecured sites will simply have http in their address. All of the sites linked to in this site are secured. You can also open an account and pay through PayPal. You will find online karaoke sites that allow you to sing karaoke over the internet and even enter online karaoke contests. These can be great fun. But when you listen to some of these uploaded karaoke performances you wonder whether the person heard themselves before uploading. More people will hear you sign online than will ever hear you in a karaoke bar - even in Vegas. So sing out, listen before you upload and be aware that, no matter how well you sing, you will only sound as good as the karaoke equipment that you are singing into. My favorite karaoke player for your PC is Kara Fun. They have a free online karaoke player that you can download. It plays a variety of types of karaoke files and offers an upgrade that will allow you to record the karaoke song with a key change and may also include your voice, if you wish. Of course, you will need a pc microphone. This setup would be great for an audition CD.

Most of the free online karaoke players will allow you to download karaoke song files, usually for a nominal price, but be aware that a midi file is simply background music (and mostly electronic keyboard). A seasoned karaoke singer will not find this acceptable.

As with all copyrighted music, it is not legal to copy Karaoke CDs for the purpose of selling or sharing. You may, however, copy karaoke CDs that you own to preserve your original disc. Copying a CDG or CD&G ( which means CD plus graphics) usually requires that you have a Plextor CD recorder. I found a used, external, Plextor CD drive on eBay for about $30 that works great.  Once you have a CD drive that will copy your karaoke CD, you can burn a back up CD or save it on your computer hard drive.

Once the CD is transferred to a digital format on your computer, you can manipulate the file type until it can be read by your PC karaoke player. There are downloadable software programs, even free programs, such as MP3G Toolz, designed exactly for this purpose. This gives you the opportunity to practice on your PC as often as needed, without possibly damaging the disc. If you have a laptop or small PC, this gives you a PC karaoke system.  Of course, professional karaoke dj’s have laptop karaoke systems designed just for this, but you can make this work at home also.
