Karaoke Guidelines

Don't Shoot the Karaoke Singer!

There really are no karaoke rules, except the rules of competition for a karaoke contest and those of the individual karaoke jockey (KJ) concerning the handling of his equipment. Since many people have no idea what is the right or wrong thing to do in a karaoke show we thought that these unspoken rules make a good guideline and will help enhance your karaoke experience and make it fun for everyone.

Attitude: Relax, have fun and smile! The more fun you have, the more people will enjoy your performance.

Participation: Everyone is encouraged to give it a try, even if you thing that you may not perform well. Feel free to sing along from your seats to the words as they appear on the monitors, but please do not try to overpower the singer. Also, dancing is encouraged.

Applause: Always applaud when a singer finishes their performance, this is especially important if this is the singer's first time singing karaoke in public. If you can't clap because the singer did a great job, clap because the song is over.

Equipment: Please respect the equipment. Please don't tap, swing, or otherwise abuse the microphone. When the host is ready for you to sing, he or she will turn the microphone on. Don't tamper with the request slips that have been turned in or any of the karaoke equipment.

Patience: Please wait your turn to sing. Don't whine or count the number of times others sing. The karaoke host will attempt to allow all participants to sing as many times as possible.

Language: Some songs include foul language. If the host allows its play, then feel free to sing the lyrics. But please be respectful of any children (kids love karaoke) that may be present. It is generally unacceptable to use the microphone for telling jokes or using foul language.

Unruly Behavior: Don't heckle or interfere with any karaoke performer. Please don't try to join any performance unless you were asked to do so before the song started. Don't forget your turn is coming. If you don't promptly acknowledge your turn in the karaoke rotation, you may be skipped, as there are others waiting their turn.

Song Selection: Unless you wrote it, you don't own it. So don't be too upset if another person sings 'your song'. There are many other choices available. Certain karaoke performers may have 'signature tunes'. Sometimes others will select one of these songs, which may irritate the regular performer. As the regular, the most polite thing to do is have other songs available to replace the first choice. Any other reaction will not endear you to the audience. You can always do the song another time. It also is never a good idea to deliberately perform someone else's song just for spite.

Karaoke rules, no way! But there are guidelines that will make the experience more fun for everyone. Remember, karaoke is meant to be fun and not too serious. Treat it as such and you'll have a good time singing karaoke!
