Hula’s Karaoke, Topsail Beach

Last night I went to Hula’s on Topsail Beach, NC. Okay, so not the best time I have had there, but still the best karaoke I have found on the island. It was really, really drunk in there – mostly a large table of guys (marines, I think). Being a recovering alcoholic, I remember how much fun I thought EVERYONE was happening when I was showing how stupid drunk I could be. No matter what you tell yourself, NO ONE sounds better singing when palstered. Also, screaming into the mic doesn’t make you more clever and entertaining. But I guess that most people don’t care; that the purpose of going to karaoke is to get plastered and make a fool of yourself. Too bad. They are missing the real fun in karaoke. Oh well, just another night in paradise.

I just found your blog and I had to respond. I am a resident of Topsail Beach/Surf City (currently and temporarily living in Guam) and the owner of Hula’s is one of my very best friends in the world! For us “locals” Hula’s is the BEST place on the island. It warmed my heart to hear someone else speak so kindly about the place that I love. About the Marines…we have this love/hate relationship with them. We hate when they are drunk and obnoxious but we love them just the same because they are for the most part just “boys” and we tolerate their rowdiness because we understand what they are put through in the Marines. Bell, the DJ is AWESOME and does her best to ensure that everyone is treated equal and has a great time. I hope you will come back to Hula’s when you are in the area and when you do, please introduce yourself to Dennis Miller and try the cheeseburger…it’s the best around!!!

Wow! Thanks Patty! I have probably been there about 6 times over the years and I know what you mean. It is a great karaoke venue. This particular night the “guys” were making fun of some of the “gays” that were there. They were just generally being dumb. But ll of them were dancing and having lots of fun. And like you say, God only know the kind of steam the marines need to blow off when they get back.

I loved it and will defintely return. If you know Dennis’ email, let him know about the blog. I would welcome input from folks with fun karaoke tales.
